  2. People who socially advocate are representing the concerns of a particular group or society based on rights or needs because they recognize a problem that needs to be addressed. For a social entrepreneur to be an advocate means that they are trying to use entrepreneurial principles to create, organize, and manage social change by keeping in line with a social mission. The general definition for an advocate is “someone who speaks on behalf of another person, especially in a legal context” (Wikipedia). However, social advocacy (SA) differs from what is practiced by lawyers or others helping with legal matters through the basis of governmental law; SA can sometimes question the status quo of governmental law and the values behind it. SA attempts to assist the disadvantaged, weaker members of society by giving them a voice, and it often takes individuals who have an innate ability or passion to fearlessly stand up for what they believe in.

An example of a social entrepreneur who is a social advocate is Professor Muhammad Yunus who founded Grameen Bank. Yunus is a great example because he has worked long and hard to fulfill his mission of helping to create lasting peace by helping large population groups find ways to break out of poverty. He created the concept of microcredit which is an extension of very small loans to those in poverty in order to spark entrepreneurship and self sustainability. He has helped liberate people across multiple cultures and civilizations and has been a particular positive force for women who struggle against repressive social and economic conditions. Grameen Bank has become successful because Yunus has successfully and effectively demonstrated his ability to give people in need a voice. Instead of trying to go against pre-existing loan systems and trying to get them to change their ways to help the disadvantaged, he created his own loan system. He has become tremendously successful as an entrepreneur because he also aims for social advocacy.

  3. “Advocacy, by an individual or by an advocacy group normally aim to influence public-policy and resource allocation decisions within political, economic, and social systems and institutions; it may be motivated from moral, ethical or faith principles or simply to protect an asset of interest” (Advocacy). There are many different types of advocacy: one of the most popular forms is social justice advocacy. There are typically three main types of social advocates: politicians, celebrities, and royalty. For social advocates, “advocacy represents the series of actions taken and issues highlighted to change the ‘what is’ into a ‘what should be’, considering that this ‘what should be’ is a more decent a more just society” (Advocacy). Advocacy has become a lever in social entrepreneurship that can bring society to “where it should be.”
An example of a social advocate is Brad Pitt and his “Make it Right Foundation.” I actually got to see this in action when visiting the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans. I met Robert Green, who was directly affected by the “Make it Right Foundation.” After Hurricane Katrina, he returned to his home after losing both his mother and his granddaughter in the flooding. All that was left of his home was his front steps (picture shown). He lived in a FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) trailer for three years, which he never considered his “home.” He then moved into his present home given to him by the “Make it Right Foundation.” The Foundation builds a house “that’s better, that’s stronger, that's environmentally friendly, that uses as many recycled materials, that uses materials that have low VOC levels. [They] also have solar panels so that we can get away from the use of fossil fuels. And it's actually a LEED Platinum certified house” (Green Living). The “Make it Right Foundation” and Brad Pitt gave a voice to those who were devastated by Hurricane Katrina and has brought more than 200 people home to the New Orleans Lower Ninth Ward.

  4. Advocacy is a popular form of social justice, where an individual or a group of individuals work on behalf of someone or something. Advocacy is working in active support and defense of an idea or cause. Advocacy is also the act of pleading or arguing for something or someone. To be an advocate is to express true commitment and dedication to a social cause. In the context of social entrepreneurship, advocacy has an important function. As stated in our text, Succeeding at Social Enterprise, “When well executed, advocacy will not only create movement for change outside the organization, but it will change the organization as well, and make it a more successful social enterprise” (Social Enterprise Alliance, 132).
An example of a social entrepreneur that is an advocate is the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) organization. This non-profit organization fights to keep the roads safe for motorists by striving to eliminate drunk driving. They raise awareness for their cause by hosting events and special functions surrounding the topic. The organization also serves as a support group for individuals that have been affected by the consequences of drinking and driving and seeks to prevent underage drinking. MADD encourages education of the dangers of drinking and driving and campaigns for tougher alcohol laws. MADD was created on the basis of advocacy; advocating for the victims of drunk driving. The organization provides value to society as a whole, aiming to protect the lives of everyone from this dangerous and deadly crime.

  6. Advocate generally means to speak on behalf of, or in favor of someone. It can also be referred as person who pleads for a cause where as advocacy by an individual or by an advocacy group normally aim to influence public-policy and resource allocation decisions. There are several forms of advocacy; social justice advocacy is the most popular form. A social advocate addresses the needs of the society. As stated in Succeeding at Social Enterprise “Progressive social change as a function of social enterprise only happens if you make advocacy a fundamental part of your program and make social change one of the standards by which you measure your enterprise.” (Succeeding at Social Enterprise, 132)

In class we watched a short youtube clip about the impacts of advocates and in the movie Elton John helped to show the public the severity of the AIDS epidemic and how we could unite as a people to stop it. Advocates are very important to have in this day and age and can help to educate the masses about various issues.

A good example of advocacy in social entrepreneurship is Hollywood actor Brad Pitt's campaigns and public support for TOMS (Tomorrows Shoes) an initiative which gives away a pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair sold.

  7. Advocacy is a key component in social enterprise. However, in many cases of social entrepreneurship advocacy is forgotten. Many believe that as long as they are helping someone then they are doing what a social entrepreneur should. An advocate provides much more than just a temporary fix. As our book, Succeeding at Social Enterprise, outlines advocacy serves the goal of ending the root causes of clients’ problems. Advocates must seek help for their clients even if they do not exemplify the most honorable citizen. For example, a social entrepreneur who has chosen to help homeless drug abusers could provide housing and food, but as an advocate they must also fight to receive funding to assist clients with rehabilitation in order to eliminate the root cause of their homelessness. In conclusion, I believe that Succeeding at Social Enterprise defines advocacy best, “Flat out, it means having the courage and determination to commit your enterprise to advocacy on behalf of the people you serve (Social Enterprise Alliance 128).”
Adcocay can be seen in a number of different ways through celebrities, actors, and business/otganizational programs. One good example of advocay is the Fair Trade Organization being promoted by musicians such as U2 and Coldplay. Thohrough advocatiuon of the program thhrough television interviews and inclusions of contact information in their CD and vinyl covers and booklets to help spread the word. This creates a situtation where evrytime you see anything Fair Trade, you automatically associate it with Coldplay and U2, and thus more likley to support it. using actors and musicians ,organizations help advocate their cause through these celebreties to form a brand and reach a greater amount of people willing to help.

  8. An advocate is someone who supports, vindicates, or recommends publicly, such as Tiger Woods and Nike. Social advocacy means “having the courage and determination to commit your enterprise to advocacy on behalf of the people you serve” (Social Enterprise Alliance, 128). A social advocate is someone who publicly supports, vindicates, or recommends a social venture of some sort. A good example of a social advocate is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation which fights to make a difference in the global community as well as local communities in the United States. One of the aspects they focus on is the importance of Global Health, which it emphasizes. They have three different programs. First one is Global Development there the mission is to help development countries to survive hunger and poverty, Global Health Program (where they development science and technology to save lives in poor countries), and the United States program (who’s mission is to help Americans to through the attainment of secondary and post-secondary education with genuine economic value) (http://www.gatesfoundation.org/united-states/Pages/program-overview.aspx).
